Why camp in Madeira

If you'd rather wake up to birdsong and cold mountain air than room service, this island was built for you. Madeira doesn't really do gentle — you're either deep in laurel forest with a levada running past your tent, or up above the clouds watching the sun come up over Pico Ruivo. There are some genuinely beautiful hotels here, but none of them get you close to that. A tent does.

That's really what this site is for. We're not a booking platform, just people who've pitched a lot of tents on this island and would rather save you the trial and error — where the legal campsites actually are, what to bring, how to get up the mountain without a car, which spot has drinking water and which one doesn't. The stuff nobody puts in the brochure.

Two places that define Madeira

Levada walking might be the reason most outdoor lovers decide to travel to Madeira — narrow water channels, built to carry water from the wet north to the farmland of the south, whose maintenance paths are now the island's best hiking network. Follow one far enough and it leads to places like these.

Fanal

Fanal is the name of one of the most well preserved original forests of Madeira Island. Located on the north of Madeira, Fanal has some of the oldest specimens of Til — Ocotea foetens; some of these trees exist since the discovery of the island. When hiking on Fanal you will feel embraced by its silence and its ancient trees.

Pico Ruivo

Rising about 1862 meters above the sea, Pico Ruivo is the highest mountain in Madeira Island. From the top you can have amazing 360º views from the North to the South of the island. This is also a magic spot for watching the sunset and sunrise. Don't miss the chance of camping above the clouds.
